Summary
[edit]DescriptionGresley "Moulton" bogie (6901369231).jpg | The superb Gresley "Spencer - Moulton" type compound double bolster bogie - it was in line to become the standard BR coach bogie on Nationalisation but the easier to maintain Collett double bolster bogie, which also gave an excellent ride, won the day. However, the modified BR version of the GWR bogie had a ride which deteriorated with high mileage and there was thought of adopring the Gresely bogie after all! In the event, the US designed Commonwealth bogie was adopted by BR until the fine B4 bogie was designed. The last Gresley bogies saw service as late as the 1990's. This bogie is on LNER Gresley Open Third No.52255, built at York, 1935 and is of the "light" (most common) type. At Bridgnorth, Severn Valley Railway, 09/11. I rode in one of the last Gresley buffet cars in service in the 1970's from Paddington to South Wales and can vouch for the excellence of it's ride. | |||||||||||||
