Summary
[edit]DescriptionGrimshawes Post Office, Whiteside Cove, NC (31682865617).jpg | This is the old Grimshawes Post Office, located in the Whiteside Cove Community along Whiteside Cove Road near Cashiers, North Carolina. Constructed circa 1878, the small, log-frame, half-log-sided front-gable building was the smallest official United States Post Office, measuring five feet by six feet, and was in operation from 1878 to 1953, and served an isolated rural community that sits in the shadows of the spectacular cliffs of Whiteside Mountain that tower above. The building was originally located on the property of Thomas Grimshawe, Sr., whom built the building and served as the first postmaster, in order to allow for more convenient access to mail for the residents of the isolated hamlet. His son then took over the post from 1902 until 1928, when he sold the property to Warren Alexander, whom was postmaster until 1941, passing to his wife Lena until 1946, the family sold the property and the post office was moved to the property of Mae Alexander Passmore, where it remained in service until 1953, when all “third-class” post offices were closed by an order from Dwight D. Eisenhower. The building was moved shortly thereafter to the top of Whiteside Mountain, where it was used as a ticket office and postcard stand, and stood near US Highway 64 along a route that has now been closed to cars. In 1976, the building was moved back down into Whiteside Cove, and moved to its current location and partially restored in 1999. The small building is a unique landmark and part of what makes the county unique, and holds a high degree of historical significance despite being moved from its original location and not being listed on the National Register of Historic Places. |
