35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Artiodactyla; Family: Bovidae; Genus: Capra; Genus species: Capra ibex. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 115-170 cm; Height: 65-105 cm; Weight: 30-100 kg; Identification: The ibex is uniformly brown. Both sexes have long thick horns, and the male has a small chin beard; Habitat: Alpine desert; Diet: Herbivore: grasses, woody plants, flowers; Reproduction: The gestation period for ibex is 165-170 days. Females usually have one, rarely two, young each time they mate; Social Structure: Females and juveniles gather in herds. Males stay in bachelor groups, joining with the herds during the mating season; Behavior: The ibex feels most at home where the ground is broken and rough. It seldom leaves the rougher parts of the mountains; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: Ibex were once hunted near extinction.
