Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 1.3-1.7 m; Height: 90-112 cm; Weight: 61-128 kg; Identification: The kafue flats lechwe has chestnut upperparts with white undersides, throat, and facial markings. It has dark legs and a dark body. Colorations can vary from black to red, and the horns are thin; Habitat: Floodplains, tropical deciduous forests, scrub forests, tropical savannas, grasslands; Diet: Herbivore: grasslands, aquatic plants; Reproduction: The gestation period for lechwe is 7-8 months long. The mother will give birth to a single calf alone or in a small group. The calf is weaned by the time it is four months old; Social Structure: During the nonbreeding season, lechwe gather in sex-segregated herds. The female herds can be particularly unstable and are constantly changing; Behavior: The majority of a lechwe's time is spent in the water, usually up to 50 cm deep. If threatened, it will submerge itself underwater. The only time spent out of the water is to rest and to give birth; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: The cheetah, lion, hyena, and hunting dog are all potential predators. |
