35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Artiodactyla; Family: Camelidae; Genus: Lama; Genus species: Lama guanicoe. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 176-202 cm; Height: 110-115 cm; Weight: 120 kg; Identification: The guanaco has a fawn brown top with white undersides. Its neck is long and thin; Habitat: Dry open country in mountains and plains, cold and temperate regions; Diet: Herbivore: grasses, forbs, browses; Reproduction: Mating takes place in August or September. After gestating for 342-368 days, the female gives birth to her offspring. The young are weaned at 6-8 months of age. Females usually give birth every other year; Social Structure: Guanacos are found in family groups consisting of one male and several females with their young; Behavior: Because they are very good swimmers, guanacos are often seen in streams. They migrate with the seasons, spending the winter in the plains and the summers in the mountains; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: Guanacos are related to the llama.
