Summary[edit]

Description Built in the early 12th century, partly rebuilt after fire in the 13th century and converted to a house for Francis Carter in the early 17th century; and further altered and restored in the 19th and 20th century. The tower and walls were restored and opened to the public as pleasure gardens in 1888 to mark Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee of the previous year
