Summary

[edit]
Description

British Gurkha engineers spent last night constructing a water purification system to provide safe drinking water to people living in a camp in Kathmandu who lost their homes in last week’s earthquake.

"When I first heard about the earthquake, I was devastated by the news – I was worried about my family."

"This is our home country and motherland. All the people of Nepal are our brothers and sisters, so we want to help as much as we can, using all the experience and knowledge we have gained."

"The water purification system took an hour to set up – but it would have been quicker in the daytime. I feel proud to be here, providing pure water which is a basic need."

Background

On 25 April, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the country, killing more than 5000 people, and injuring thousands more.

The UK is responding to Nepal's request for international help, sending search and rescue teams, emergency medics and logistical support.
