Description

Gutter cast in fossiliferous limestone in the Ordovician of Ohio, USA. (view of underside of bed; pen for scale)

Gutter casts are curvilinear, trough-like structures that occur in some sedimentary successions. The gutters formed by erosive gullying. The sediments that fill the gutters are often sufficiently different from those in which the gutter is incised. After lithification and weathering, the sediment fills erode out as casts.
