H.M.S. Queen was built in 1839 in Portsmouth dockyard. She was the Flagship of the Mediterranean fleet under the command of Vice-Admiral Sir Campbell Rich Owen (1771-1849), who took her out to the Mediterranean in 1843.

An autograph version of this composition was sold by sotheby's on 15th July 1992, lot 4
