| Description |
English: Railway line Aliwal North - Lady Grey - Barkly East: View from the Northern tunnel face (not visible, because behind photo position) to the opposite side of the Karringmelkspruit gorge. The original intention was to lay the railway line through the cutting (in picture left) and then over a bridge with a height above ground of 90 m. On the right side a class 19D locomotive pushes her train to the 4th reverse station. The water tank at which the loco has filled her tender is almost hidden by the smoke.
Deutsch: Strecke Aliwal North - Lady Grey - Barkly East: Blick vom nördlichen Tunnelportal (nicht sichtbar, da direkt hinter dem Fotostandpunkt) auf die gegenüberliegende Schluchtseite über das Tal des Karringmelkspruit. Durch den links sichtbaren Einschnitt sollte die Strecke ursprünglich verlaufen und anschließend über eine 90 m hohe Brücke geführt werden. Rechts drückt eine Dampflokomotive der Baureihe 19D gerade ihren Zug Richtung 4. Spitzkehre. Der Wasserturm, an dem die Lok eben ihre Vorräte ergänzt hat, ist durch den Qualm weitgehend verdeckt. |
