[edit]DescriptionHMS Howe (1815) (51031348788).jpg |
A model of the Nelson Class 120-gun 1st Rate 3-decker ship-of-the-line HMS Howe at the Glasgow Transport Museum, 2 March 2007. The three Nelson Class ships of 1814-15 were designed jointly by Sir William Rule and Henry Peake based on Admiralty instructions as a new standard design for 1st Rates but they proved not as good as Sir William Rule’s HMS Caledonia of 1808. The two 1st Rates that followed the Nelsons were repeats of the excellent Caledonia. The Nelsons measured 205 ft x 54 ft x 24 ft and had a burthen of 2,619 tons. HMS Howe was launched in 1815 at Chatham Dockyard and differed from her sisters in that she employed Sir Robert Seppings’s system of diagonal bracing which greatly improved the strength of large wooden ships. She was broken up in 1854, made obsolete by steam power. The standard armament of the Nelsons was as follows: Fo’c’stle: 2x12 pdrs + 2x32 pdr carronades Quarterdeck: 6x12 pdrs + 10x32 pdr carronades (+6x18 pdr carronades on the poop not counted in the 120 gun rating!) Upper Deck: 34x18 pdrs Middle Deck: 34x24 pdrs Lower Deck: 32x32 pdrs |
