Français : Le 11 mai 1847, la municipalité décide d’étudier le projet de construction d’une halle pour abriter le marché aux volailles-boucherie-charcuterie, établi jusque-là en plein air place de la foire (actuelle place Bellevue).
Mais un Biarrot, M. Russac avait déjà construit une halle particulière, dite halle Russac, dans sa propriété de la rue d’Espagne (actuelle rue Gambetta). Le conseil municipal, présidé par le docteur Adema, maire, signe le 18 mai 1862 un contrat de location de ce bâtiment pour une durée de quinze ans. Durant ces années, Biarritz est en plein essor, et la construction d’une halle ou marché couvert devient indispensable. La municipalité Jaulerry accepte les plans de M. Ozanne, architecte de Mont-de-Marsan. Napoléon III, intéressé par le projet, participe à la dépense. Le 19 avril 1885, la halle de Biarritz est inaugurée. C’est le temps où l’on rencontre sur les chemins menant à Biarritz les paysannes d’Arbonne, Bidart, Ahetze ou Bassussarry venant apporter lait, légumes et volailles, montées sur leurs ânes. Plus tard ces équipages pittoresques font place aux charrettes, aux « jardinières » tirées par des chevaux. La municipalité Joseph Petit agrandit le bâtiment par l’adjonction de la halle aux poissons. Enfin, en 1949, la municipalité Guy Petit remplace les verrières latérales par des croisillons de béton et des dalles de verre. |
