Description
Photographs of the four Hamond brothers

Compilation, stained glass at base of the east Window in West Acre Church, Norfolk, showing the four Hamond brothers, sons of Anthony Hamond (1805-1869), lord of the manors of of West Acre and Swaffham, Norfolk, by his wife Mary Anne Musters, eldest daughter of John Musters of Colwick, Annesley, Nottinghamshire. ( Burke, John,A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Commoners of Great Britain and Ireland A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Commoners of Great Britain and Ireland Enjoying Territorial Possessions or High Official Rank; but Uninvested with Heritable Honours, London, 1836, pp.1036-7). All died without issue, thus on the death of the last survivor, Thomas Astley Horace Hamond (1845-1917), who appears to have been the donor/commissioner of the stained glass, he was succeeded in the manor of Swaffham by his nephew Admiral R.M. Harbord-Hamond, but the senior male representative of the Hamond family became Thomas's first cousin once-removed, Capt. Robert Gerald Hamond, of Paraguay. The sons were as follows, in order of seniority:

  • Anthony Hamond (1834-1895), eldest son; lord of the manor of of West Acre and Master of Foxhounds; married but died aged 61 without issue; dressed as a Master of Fox Hounds;
  • Philip Hamond (1838-1861), second son, who died in India of sunstroke aged 22/3, serving as a cornet in the 21st Light Dragoons; unmarried; dressed as a soldier;
  • Admiral Richard Horace Hamond (1843-1906), third son, second surviving son; lord of the manor of of West Acre; died unmarried aged 63; dressed as an admiral;
  • Thomas Astley Horace Hamond (1845-1917), a solicitor, fourth son, third surviving son, lord of the manor of of West Acre; died unmarried aged 72; dressed as a civilian, in the style and attitude of a mediaeval donor.
