Notes
English: The wahaika were used by the Maori as war weapons in close combat but also as ceremonial objects of high-ranking persons. The typical convex striking edge is complemented above the handle by a carved human figure and a human face on the pommel. This virtuously crafted piece traces back to the prototypical shape of this weapon. It is believed that such highly decorated wahaika were made for sale. The spiral and intertwined patterns (tauira) are not just decorative but have specific meanings.
