Summary

[edit]
Description This quaint victorian cottage was home to Hanley Gibbs, a relative of Ulrich Gibbs, who built a nearby Craftsman-style bungalow in the 1920s. The house is a fine example of the Queen Anne style as applied to a smaller structure, with ornate gable and porch details that make this the most ornate Victorian-era building in the old town of Whittier. Built during the time in which the town was a thriving railroad stop and commercial center along the Tuckaseigee River, this house sits on the side of the river that once was home to the town’s main commercial district, as well as a depot and school. However, the town’s fortunes declined when US Highway was routed through the area on the opposite (Jackson County) side of the river, which, compounded with the Great Depression and collapse of the local lumber industry, on which the town was heavily reliant, and the town was disincorporated in 1933. Since that time, the town’s business community has continued to dwindle, with the few businesses left being located on the Jackson County side of the river, and most old commercial buildings on the Swain County side of the river from when it was a thriving hub of activity having vanished.
