JPEG file comment | Description Luke's gospel (2. 46-50) tells us that when Jesus was 12, he and Mary and Joseph travelled to Jerusalem for the Passover festival. However, as they were leaving the city, His parents realised that Jesus was missing, and three days later found him in the temple, asking questions of the learned men inside, and astonishing everyone with his understanding. In this work by the German painter Schäufelein, Mary and Joseph can be seen entering the temple on the extreme right, about to witness this first indication of their son's special relationship with God. This important double sided panel is one of four parts of a folding altarpiece, the other parts of which are in other museums and private collections. ------------------------------------------- Notes Previous recorded attributions to Albrecht Altdorfer, in the 1917 and 1921 Shipley catalogues; by the 1951 Shipley catalogue this had been changed to South German School. However, in the early 1960s, Pieter Schrieder did a lot of work on the attribution, and since then the attribution to Hans Schäufelein has been unchallenged. Hans Schäufelein the Elder is known to have been a student of Albrecht Durer, with whose work his own is often confused. He worked very much in the manner of Durer, and his work was influential at the time. His son, Hans Schäufelein the Younger was very much influenced by his father's work. This work forms the recto of G1186b, The Reviling of Christ. This important double sided panel is one of 4 parts of a folding altarpiece, the other parts of which are in other museums and private collections. The original altarpiece consisted of the following works (in pairs, because each panel is double sided): The Birth of Christ and The Agony in the Garden (acquired by the Hamburg Gallery, 1929); Christ in the Temple and The Flagellation of Christ (purchased by J.A.D. Shipley in 1883, and now in the Shipley Art Gallery, bequeathed 1909); The Adoration of the Magi and The Flagellation of Christ (bought at Christie's June, 1970, b |
