JPEG file comment	Description This violent scene is taken from the Gospel of Matthew 27. 27-31: Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Common Hall... And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. And when they had plaited a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying Hail, King of the Jews! And they spit upon him, and took the reed and smote him on the head. Like many of his contemporary northern European artists, Schäufelein has taken an almost perverse delight in depicting every detail of the gruesome scene. The horror of the episode is heightened by the artist's inclusion of the Virgin Mary, watching the tormentation of her son through a window in the background. This important double sided panel is one of four parts of a folding altarpiece, the other parts of which are in other museums and private collections. ------------------------------------------------- Notes Previous recorded attributions have been given to Albrecht Altdorfer, in the 1917 and 1921 Shipley Catalogues; by the 1951 Shipley Catalogue this had been changed to South German School. However, in the early 1960s, Pieter Schrieder did a lot of work on the attribution, and since then the attribution to Hans Schäufelein has been unchallenged. Stylistically, this attribution still appears sound. Hans Schäufelein the Elder is known to have been a student of Albrecht Durer, with whose work his own is often confused. He worked very much in the manner of Durer, and his work was influential at the time. His son, Hans Schäufelein the Younger was very much influenced by his father's work. This work forms the verso of G1186a, Christ in the Temple . This important double sided panel is one of 4 parts of a folding altarpiece, the other parts of which are in other museums and private collections.
