Protected by law. Top Gold Medal, Ostende 1899. Based on original impressions by the composer's children with his kind permission. Uniform title: Grimm: Hänsel und Gretel (“Hansel and Gretel”) Dimensions: 142 x 92 mm. Date: 1899 or earlier Nationality: German Publisher: Carl Seyd, Boppard, Germany Series: No. 8821 Medium: black and white photograph with hand coloring Interpretive notes: First card in the German version of a photographic postcard series published in both German and French editions. As they tire of their work making brooms, Hansel and Gretel hope that their Mother will soon come home. This series was inspired by the 1893 opera Hansel and Gretel by composer Engelbert Humperdinck (German, 1854-1921), and the rhyming couplet quoted on the card is from the libretto by his sister Adelheid Wette. The photographs, credited to C. Daiber, feature the childen of the composer. The figures are posed against a painted backdrop. Subject headings: Brothers; Sisters
