Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 152-182 cm; Weight: 113 kg; Identification: The harbor seal is light gray or brown in color with black or lighter-colored spots; Habitat: Coasts near river inlets; Diet: Carnivore: fish, cephalopods, crustaceans; Reproduction: Females give birth to a single calf from late April to mid-June. For the first week of its life, the calf rides its mothers back. At 30 days of age, the calf is weaned and its mother will mate soon afterwards. Gestation lasts 11 months. Harbor seals may live as long as 25 years; Social Structure: Harbor seals form large, unstable groups; Behavior: Harbor seals are very curious animals and are also very friendly to humans; Status: Endangered: marine pollution, hunting; Interesting Facts: Harbor seals can be differentiated from sea lions by several factors, including that they do not have external ears and cannot walk on their fore or hind limbs (rather, they inch along on their bellies).
