Death Snatches Ship Reporters' Dean From Fame. Harold I. Smith, twenty-five years a ship news reporter and known to the great and near great in every country on the globe, died suddenly in Paris yesterday, it was reported yesterday. Like Lord Byron, Smith, who had reported the arrival and departure of notables here for twenty-five years, woke up one day to find himself famous. That was May 14, when, accompanied by his wife, he sailed for Europe on the Berengaria, while many harbor craft broke forth into a roar in his honor. Smith, often called "Judge" Smith, because he was once a Justice of the Peace in New Jersey, went to Europe at the suggestion of Mrs. Hermann Oelrichs. Abroad he was to have been the guest of the Earl of Granard, Lord Riddell, Frieda Hempel, Mary Garden and Peggy O'Neill.
