Description
English: This image, captured on August 25, 2017, at 16:32 UTC (11:32 AM CDT), depicts Hurricane Harvey in true color. The snapshot was taken by the European Space Agency's Sentinel-3A satellite, which entered orbit in February 2016. Harvey, originating from the Atlantic's main development region, emerged during the remarkably active and destructive 2017 Atlantic hurricane season. Initially, it began as a feeble and disorganized tropical storm, impacting parts of the Caribbean along its trajectory. Crossing the Caribbean Sea, it deteriorated into a tropical wave due to adverse conditions but regained strength over the Gulf of Mexico. At the moment of capture, Hurricane Harvey was classified as a Category 3 major hurricane, boasting winds of 115 mph (185 km/h) (100 knots) on the 1-minute Saffir-Simpson scale, with a pressure hovering around 946 mbar (27.9 inHg). Subsequently, it intensified into a Category 4 major hurricane, wreaking havoc on Southeastern Texas, particularly the Houston Metropolitan area. The catastrophe resulted in 107 fatalities and incurred damages totaling $125 billion in 2017 U.S. dollars, equaling the record set by Hurricane Katrina as the costliest tropical cyclone in history.
