Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Haskin-Greenough House, 155 Englewood Avenue, Buffalo, New York, March 2021. A classic bungalow-style residence of simple design, the most eye-catching architectural detail of this modest-scaled University Heights residence is the pair of tapered pillars supporting the semi-enclosed front porch, whose widely overhanging eaves and exposed rafter tails are in accordance with the principles of the Arts & Crafts school of design of which bungalows are a subtype. The roof, too, sports a shallow-pitched gable with overhanging eaves. The first of the two titular owners of the house was William Morris Haskin (1873-1943), a longtime employee of the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company who then worked as an engineer in their Elmwood Avenue airplane factory and later ascended to an executive position. He lived in the house for four years after its construction in 1913, at which point it was sold to Henry Greenough (1864-1921), a Buffalo Police patrolman long affiliated with the 9th Precinct on Seneca Street. After Greenough's death from "injuries received in the service", his widow Exilda continued living in the house with their children for some time, finally moving back to her hometown of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin in 1934, after the marriage of her daughter to a man from there.
