Summary[edit]

Description
English: "Last Stand Hill" and grave markers at the Little Bighorn National Battlefield in southeast Montana near Crow Agency. Here, on the afternoon of June 25th, 1876, General George Armstrong Custer and 262 men of the U.S. 7th cavalry under his command were wiped out by combined and superior Native American tribal forces of Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapahoe. This view is looking southwest. Custer's marker is seen in the center of the others with the "black" herald on the front and is placed approximately where he fell. The rows of trees seen just below the horizon indicate the location of the Little Bighorn River where the estimated 8,000 Native Americans were encamped during that time period. To the right of the trees can be seen the 7th Cavalry cemetery for all other US cavalrymen who were killed here during the fierce 2 day battle. Snow covered mountain ranges in the Bighorn National Forest can just be seen on the horizon.

I have always been interested and fascinated by this battle and the apparent zealous Custer who disobeyed his orders and attacked these people and their warriors that by far outnumbered his own regiment and it all took place just before the nation's Centennial celebration. It would be the only true big victory for Native Americans over whites during the war on the plains in the last half of the 19th Century.
