Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Helmut Tanzmann (January 18, 1907 – March 6, 1946) was a German jurist, SS leader, and government advisor with the Reich Security Main Office (Sicherheitsdienst, SD). He studied law and earned his doctorate in the early 1930s. Tanzmann joined the Nazi Party and SA in 1933, transferring to the SS in 1936. He became SS-Obersturmbannführer in 1941. Tanzmann held various positions, including head of the Gestapo in Danzig and Commander of the Security Police and SD (KdS) in Lviv, where he organized and ordered mass murders of Jews. Disciplinary issues led to his replacement in Lviv in 1943. Later, he served as KdS in Montpellier and Marseille, coordinating Jewish deportations and actions against the French Resistance. In late 1944, he led Sonderkommando Tanzmann in Norway. At war’s end, he attempted to flee disguised as a sailor but was captured by the British. Facing prosecution, he committed suicide in London in 1946.
