Henry Putnam Carlton Crosses Death's Portal. Pioneer Educator and Newspaperman Dies in Oakland. Oakland, California; January 31, 1909. Henry Putnam Carlton, one of the pioneer educators of San Francisco, died last night in a local hospital at the age of S7. Carlton was born at Andover, Massachusetts, in 1821, and was educated at the famous Phillips Andover Academy, completing his course at the University of Vermont. In the early fifties Carlton came to San Francisco, where he was associated with John Swett and other old time instructors in starting the educational system of that city. He lived in San Francisco for 35 year 3, during which time he was married and hU children were born. Leaving teaching. Carlton became a newspaperman, remaining In that .vocation on one of the San Francisco papers for several years. In 1879 he removed with his family to Oakland. He was in good health until just before Christmas, when his age brought on an illness which ended fatally. The funeral will take place at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon from 57ft Thirteenth street, with interment at Mountain View cemetery. Carlton left a widow, Mrs. Jpnnle B. Carlton and three children, Gertrude H., Philip S., and Dr. Harry P. Carlton, the last named a dentist of this city, prominent clubman and member of the board of public library trustees.
