JPEG file comment | http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/16627/lot/21/ Henry Scott Tuke RA, RWS (British, 1858-1929) A three-masted ship at anchor oil on canvas 32 x 48.5cm The present work may well have been cut down from a larger canvas, hence there is no evidence of a signature or date. Fully rigged ships were a constant source of inspiration for Tuke, and the work is typical of his style and technique of handling oils. The small sailing boat in the centre of the picture is a regular feature of many of Tuke's maritime scenes, as is the flock of seabirds depicted on the right. It was probably painted in Falmouth harbour in Cornwall. |
