Deutsch: Illustration Brockhaus and Efron Enzyklopädie (1906-1913) - Herzel Jankel Zam, wahrscheinlich einziger jüdischer Offizier im Russischen Reich des 19. Jahrhunderts. Im Alter von 17 Jahren trat er als Kantonist in die Kaiserlich Russische Armee ein. Nach einer Dienstzeit von 41 Jahren avancierte er zum Hauptmann. Trotz erheblicher Einflussnahme von außen konvertierte er nie zur Staatsreligion des Russisch-Orthodoxen Christentums.
