Summary
[edit]DescriptionHesquiaht pole and Tseshaht house at the Canadian Museum of Civilization (8347855193).jpg | Nuu-Chah-Nulth Pole carved by Tim Paul, with the assistance of Kevin Cranmer, gifted by the Royal BC Museum and the Hesquiaht First Nation to the CMC on the occasion of the opening of its new building. Art Thompson was commissioned to carve the headdress. The four main figures, from top to bottom are a founding ancestor of the Hesquiaht, a chief named Ma-tla-ho-ah (in a dancing position and with an elaborate headdress combining a mythical serpent with the visage of the first whiteman to come in contact with the Hesquiaht people); a Thunderbird with a lightning serpent extending below the wings; a mythic sea mammal hunter holding a whaling harpoon; the sea mammal hunter's rival, whom he placed inside a whale/canoe and sent out to sea in revenge for the murder of his sister. Also visible is a Nuu-Chah-Nulth house from the 1800s which belonged to the head chief of the Tsesha'ath / Tseshaht people, near the present-day town of Port Alberni. (Ottawa, Canada, Dec. 2012) |
