Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This is a ‘Highball’ bouncing bomb, designed and developed by Barnes Wallis alongside the more familiar ‘Upkeep’ bouncing bomb used by 617 Squadron of Dambusters fame. A pair of ‘Highball’ were carried and spun by a single Mosquito and were intended for use against shipping. Although successfully tested in May 1944 against the retired battleship HMS Malaya, they were never used in anger as their primary target, the battleship Tirpitz, had been sunk by other means. Although ‘Highball’ had never proved to be a risk to its Mosquito carrier, the same was not true when the bomb was later tested by the USAAC near Eglin in Florida. Renamed ‘Speedee’, the bombs were fitted in an A-26 Invader but when dropped then bounced back up and took the tail off the A-26, with fatal results.

The mount fitted to the bomb here was recovered from the crash site of a Mosquito fitted with Highball equipment which crashed while blind flying. On display in the Walter Goldsmith Hangar. de Havilland Aircraft Museum, Salisbury Hall, London Colney, UK.
