Summary[edit]

Description
English: The headquarters of Hispanics United of Buffalo, 254 Virginia Street at 10th Street, Buffalo, New York, May 2020. The austere aesthetic of the building was described by researcher James Napora as "virtually without style"; the pointed arches above the second-story windows and main entrance the only indicators of the unknown architect's Gothic inclinations. From its construction in 1869 through to 1921, the it served as home to the First Free Methodist Church, Buffalo's congregation of a denomination that had its beginnings nine years earlier in Niagara County and which held that the equality of all people under God precluded the notion of charging money for favorable seating arrangements within the church building, a common practice at the time. Later on, seeking a more centralized location, the congregation purchased the former Central Park Methodist Episcopal Church, which they moved piece by piece to the corner of Jefferson and Florida Avenues in Hamlin Park. The post-1921 history of the building is much murkier; it was in use as a gymnasium c. 1926, and by 1979, the precursor organization of Hispanics United of Buffalo had already begun occupying the building. Hispanics United provides health care, housing and social services to the Western New York Latino community.
