Summary[edit]
DescriptionHistorical Marker, Gates of Heaven Synagogue, Gorham Street and Butler Street, Tenney-Lapham, Madison, WI.jpg |
English: Built in 1863, this “Rundbogenstil”-variant Romanesque Revival-style building was designed by August Kutzbock to serve the congregation of the Gates of Heaven Synagogue. It is the oldest surviving synagogue in the upper Midwest and the eighth-oldest still-standing synagogue in the United States. The Shaarei Shamayim congregation, which built the synagogue, was formed in 1856 by Jewish immigrants from Germany who remained in the building until the Panic of 1873 caused the congregation to fold. The building then became home to a Unitarian congregation, which leased the building. It later became home to a Woman’s Christian Temperance Union chapter and several church congregations, and it served as a funeral home and a warehouse. The building was originally located on West Washington Avenue but was moved to James Madison Park in 1971 to save it from demolition. The building features a front gable roof, sandstone block front facade wtih arched windows, machicolations, a gabled parapet, two small rose windows, a double entry door, a front vestibule with a front gable roof, Roman arched windows, and corbeling. The sides and rear of the building feature buff brick cladding, brick pinnacles, Roman arched windows with two-over-two double-hung sash, brick corbeling and pilasters, and a semi-circular rear apse. The inside of the synagogue is relatively simple with plaster walls, a wooden floor, a cove ceiling, a balcony in the rear, an antique chandelier, and an Ark with a carved wooden surround and low carved wooden railings in a semi-circular niche. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and is a contributing structure in the Mansion Hill Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. The building today is owned by the City of Madison and utilized as an events venue, to hold weddings and Jewish worship services, and as a polling location. |
