Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The former site of the village of Tolomato, inhabited by the Guale people during the First Spanish Period, this cemetery was originally built around the Catholic mission that served the village. Following the cession of the city to the British in 1763, the Guale people, along with most other inhabitants of the city, left for Havana. The mission was subsequently demolished, and the land sat mostly unused until 1777, when the failure of the New Smyrna colony led to Menorcans moving up the coast to St. Augustine, whereupon the Catholic group needed a burial ground, with the former Catholic cemetery being utilized for this purpose. The cemetery continued to see Catholic burials until it was closed in 1884.
