The locomotive is driven through asingle reduction gear of very low ratio. The speed is cor-respondingly low, and is rated at 8 miles an hour whenhauling a heavy load. The overhead wire is No. 00 suspended from wires strungbetween octagonal cedar poles, except at two or threepoints, where bracket construction is used. Where thelocomotive turns in from Hudson avenue to the RiverWalk, a peculiar condition has caused a special method ofbracket construction. It was necessary for the overheadline to be so set as not to infringe upon the limit of the nextproperty. Thus at this point the overhead line is suspendedfrom two bracket arms, one 6 ft. and the other 18 ft. long. The current for the road is taken from the station of theHudson Electric Light Company. The switching of the cars for the past three months hasbeen effected by a repair car of the Hudson County ElectricRailroad Company. The new locomotive was put intoregular service on January 4, 1S98, hauling trains of loadedand empty freight cars between the docks and the Erietrack. The locomotive was constructed in the shops of the Gen-eral Electric Company, at Schenectady, N. Y., and some-what resembles in appearance the electric locomotive in useon the Manufacturers Railroad, which connects with theN. Y., N. H. & H. R. R. tracks at New Haven, Conn., andthose of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, at Baltimore. Itis mounted on two four-wheel trucks, each axle carrying aG. E. 2.000 motor, giving the locomotive a tot
