Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Hodkiewicz-Cohen Bakery building, 1132 Broadway at Sobieski Street, Buffalo, New York, June 2020. Though the front portion of the building facing Broadway (not seen here) has been altered beyond recognition by the addition of modern Dryvit siding, the east elevation of the building, facing Sobieski Street, still presents the building in essentially its original Romanesque Revival design, the work of architect Władysław Zawadzki. The mansard-roofed portion at left (featuring rusticated stone surrounds framing both round-arched and oculus windows) dates to 1906 and was the original portion of the bakery Zawadzki designed for owner Edmund Hodkiewicz; the two-story, flat-roofed addition at rear, a 1912 addition, is quite different in appearance, with corbeling along the roof line and lintel-style window heads. Al Cohen took over the building in 1933 from Hodkiewicz, and the business is still in operation, renowned around Western New York for its rye bread.
