| Description |
English: The Holy Cross Church of Armenia parish started in 1929 when it moved to an existing church that had been completed in 1926 for the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Our Saviour. (The Lutherans moved to newer buildings nearby.) The current church building was completed in 1953 and consecrated in 1954. It was designed by architect Manoog Exerjian, a member of the church who earlier served as the parish’s first choir master. Some sources, including a history published by the parish in 1979, state that the old church had been razed and this was a new building. Other sources indicate this was an alteration and expansion of the old building. In fact, the new church is approximately twice as wide as the old, so at the very least much of the church was newly constructed in 1952-1953. The parish house (582 West 187th Street), to the west of the church (578-580 West 187th Street), was purchased and donated by parish member Haik Kavookjian in the early 1950s; this helped facilitate construction of the new, larger church. The site of the new church was previously occupied by the old church (578 West 187th Street) and the old parish house (580 West 187th Street). |
