Summary
[edit]DescriptionHoneymoon Lake - Flickr - Bernd Thaller.jpg | Honeymoon Lake, Alberta, Canada. What appears beautiful in the image, is actually a major disaster. The red color of the trees is caused by the mountain pine beetle. In 2019, most of the pine trees in Jasper National Park were infested. The outbreak has affected more than 18 million hectares of forest in British Columbia and Alberta. Unusually dry and warm winters in recent years, perhaps due to climate change, let the beetle population grow beyond all bounds. The pine needles of turn red within a year of the attack, which means that the tree is dead or dying. |
