Summary

[edit]
Description

At this site stood Hooge Chateau and its associated stables. At first thought safe, a barrage on 31 October 1914 disproved this by destroying the 1st and 2nd Divisions. German forces attacked the chateau in May and June 1915; as part of the defensive action, a massive mine was detonated here in July 1915, leaving a crater. Despite this, the chateau was taken by German forces the same month. In August, Imperial forces regained the site; it was taken again by German forces in June 1916. Imperial forces retook the site in July 1917 and German forces took it back in April 1918; Imperial forces took the site again in September 1918 and swept past. The chateau was completely destroyed during the war.

The cemetery on the site was established in October 1917 with 76 graves; later finds of bodies and concentration from other sites expanded this to the present 5,923 graves, of which the majority, 3,579, are of unidentified soldiers.

The cemetery is a Sir Edwin Lutyens design.
