Summary[edit]
DescriptionHorace Reed House, Buffalo, New York - 20210105.jpg |
English: Horace Reed House, 94 Oakland Place, Buffalo, New York, January 2021. One of the older houses on the street, here we have an interesting example of the hybridization of Colonial Revival and Queen Anne architecture that was popular around the time the house was built (1894). The overall rectangular layout and the bilateral symmetry you see on the second floor and attic level of the house testify to the former, while the projecting bay windows on the south elevation, the half-width front porch, the gently sloping hipped roof, and the varied siding materials (stucco-covered brock on the ground floor; clapboard above) represent the latter. At the time this house was built, the Ohio-born Horace Reed (1870-1960) was employed as the personal secretary of William Phelps Northrup, of the printing firm of Matthews-Northrup. However, two years later, he (along with his father-in-law John J. McWilliams, who'd gifted the house to Reed as a wedding present) became one of the founding partners of the Niagara Lithograph Company, for which he served in various executive posts, including secretary, treasurer and, after McWilliams' death in 1912, as its president. It was shortly after his ascension to the post of president when Reed had an addition built on the rear of his house, which was by now the home not only of himself and his wife but of their three sons and two servants; the large library that was built at this time was also used as a dining room for the many formal dinners that would be held by the Reed family over the next decades. |
