Summary
[edit]DescriptionHornblende gabbro (Salem Neck, Massachusetts, USA) 2.jpg |
English: Gabbro is a mafic, phaneritic, intrusive igneous rock composed principally of plagioclase feldspar and pyroxene. The dominant mafic mineral component of the sample seen here is not pyroxene, however - it's amphibole (hornblende). Sometimes the term "bojite" is used to refer to amphibole-bearing gabbros, but "hornblende gabbro" seems to be preferrable in modern times.
Geologic unit: unrecorded/undisclosed (but possibly derived from the Salem Gabbro-Diorite (a.k.a. Salem Diorite-Gabbro), Middle Ordovician, 460 Ma) Locality: unrecorded locality at Salem Neck, southern Essex County, northeastern Massachusetts, USA |
