Summary

[edit]
Description Built circa 50 BC, this octagonal tower, known as the Horologion of Andronikos Cyrrhestes or Tower of the Winds, was constructed as a clock tower during the Roman period, and was designed by Andronicus of Cyrrhus. The structure, the only remaining ancient clock tower, is made of marble with a hipped roof and decorative sculptural reliefs, and formerly featured two corinthian porticoes. The structure today is one of the few remaining mostly intact Classical buildings in the world, and has inspired many derivative buildings, starting during the Classical Revivals of the early Modern period.
