Summary[edit]

Description
English: As seen in June 2020: the c. 1870, one-and-a-half-story, wood-frame house at 186 Linwood Avenue in Buffalo, New York is architecturally notable as 1) an early, pre-Sears Roebuck example of a "catalog house", built to a standardized pattern using pre-cut wood, and 2) an interesting interpretation of the French Second Empire style incorporating clear Italianate influences (the mansard roof with ornamental keystones topping round- and baskethandle-arched windows testify strongly to the former, while the dimensions and symmetry of the façade and the presence of the tower betray the latter). Notable people recorded to have lived there include Dr. James H. Lewis (1876-1962), a physician employed at the Lackawanna steel plant and one of the first Buffalonians to own an automobile. It's a contributing property to the locally-listed Linwood Historic District.
