The first architect was the Frenchman Simon de la Vallée, who designed a French Renaissance palace. After his death in 1642, he was succeeded by the German Heinrich Wilhelm (died 1652), who during which in the years 1646-1652 led the constructionm, and then by the Dutchman Justus Vingboons (died 1698), who returned to Amsterdam in 1656, and the Frenchman Jean de la Vallée (died 1696), son of Simon de la Vallée. The last three architects have left their mark on the building.
