Nederlands: Het Huis Janssens, een herenwoning in neo-Vlaamse renaissancestijl, werd in 1878-1880, als eerste woning in de Zamanstraat, gebouwd in opdracht van Alfons Janssens, industrieel en volksvertegenwoordiger. In 1909 verkochten de erfgenamen van Alfons Janssens de woning aan het stadsbestuur op uitdrukkelijke voorwaarde dat het een openbare functie zou krijgen, om de kennis van de kunst en de wetenschap te bevorderen en te verspreiden. In 1911 werd het gebouw ingericht als stedelijk museum. Momenteel herbergt het nog steeds de collectie van de Koninklijke Oudheidkundige Kring van het Land van Waas. Het gebouw werd, mede door zijn museumfunctie, zeer authentiek bewaard. Het is bovendien een zeer fraai en uitzonderlijk voorbeeld van een museum uit het begin van de 20ste eeuw: de oorspronkelijke museuminrichting bleef nagenoeg volledig bewaard. De woning werd ontworpen door de Gentse architect Pieter Van Kerkhove die in 1875 ook het winnende ontwerp voor het nieuwe stadhuis van Sint-Niklaas had gemaakt.
Alfons Janssens stamde uit een invloedrijke Sint-Niklase familie. Hij was diepgelovig, sterk vlaamsgezind, kunstzinnig en sociaal geëngageerd. De keuze voor de neo-vlaamse renaissance lag voor de hand als bouwstijl voor zijn nieuwe woning: een eerbetoon aan het roemrijke Vlaamse verleden uit de 16de eeuw met zijn perfecte eenheid tussen architectuur, kunsten en ambachten. Ook de gotiek, de katholieke stijl bij uitstek, kreeg een waardige toepassing in de huiskapel op de eerste verdieping. In de loop der jaren onderging het gebouw nauwelijks verbouwingen. Zelfs het interieur werd in belangrijke mate bewaard. Het Huis Janssens kan vandaag dan ook beschouwd worden als een schitterend en vrij uitzonderlijk voorbeeld van een laat-19de-eeuwse herenwoning, een getrouwe afspiegeling van de smaak en het karakter van de bouwheer, een ode aan het roemrijke Vlaamse verleden.
