Summary[edit]

Description

The house shrew (Crocidura russula) is an insectivorous mammal in the shrew family. So don't confuse them with regular mice. Regular mice are rodents and love granaries and your pantry. The house shrew is regularly found in human settlements, where they help fight pests.

Now that the heat and drought continue, these smallest mammals are also getting into trouble. Waters dry up, insects become scarce or retreat deep into the ground. In the morning we found this (otherwise protected) toddler, totally panicked. They weigh only a few grams and, due to their high heart rate, need their weight in food. That was clearly no longer working. Of course we took him to the garden where there are enough bowls of water and the ground is wet and full of worms. Insects flying around and hiding places aplenty. They only live 2.5 years. You at least give them that.
