Summary

[edit]
Description

Walk on the Huntington Wagon Road and you follow the footsteps of the soldiers, adventurers and immigrants who passed this way before you. The HWR is an easy 2-mile round trip hike that includes trees blazes and a historic campsite. Other unmarked routes along the way offer extra loops to explore.

Know Before You Go: Open YEAR ROUND, No fees. The trail is not ADA accessible. Overnight camping is not allowed; no restrooms or water. Pets should remain under owner control at all times. Protect cultural resources – leave artifacts such as arrowheads and blazed trees in their place. The HWR trail is open to horse, foot and mountain bike travel. Motorized vehicles are not allowed. This area is closed to geocaching and all firearm discharge, including paintball guns.

Directions: The HWR Trail is located 5 miles NE of Bend. Exit Hwy 97 at Deschutes Market Rd. and follow signs to Deschutes Market Rd – continue to the intersection with Dale Rd and turn left (east). Travel 0.8 miles to McGrath Rd and turn right. Follow McGrath for 1.3 miles to a parking area on the right after the cattle guard. GPS coordinates: Lat. 44.136595; Long. -121.223392

Point of Interest: This trail is part of a wagon route built for hauling supplies from The Dalles to build Fort Klamath – many of the artifacts found here can be viewed at Bend’s Deschutes Historical Museum.
