Summary[edit]
DescriptionHurricane Katrina, 2005 (50700828582).jpg |
English: Hurricane Katrina carved a path of destruction from Miami to New Orleans, and up the Eastern United States. This infrared satellite image from NOAA's GOES-12 satellite at around 8:15 p.m. CT, August 28, 2005, helped forecasters confirm the storm's ferocity, with a well-developed eye and very cold cloud tops (white shading) around its center of circulation. Katrina was a Category-5 hurricane with sustained winds of 175 mph on the day this image was taken. By the time Katrina made landfall on the morning of August 29, it had weakened somewhat, but was still a major Category-3 hurricane with a storm surge in locations of 25-28 feet above normal tide levels. Considering the scope of its death and destruction, Hurricane Katrina remains one of the most devastating natural disasters in United States history. |
