Summary[edit]

Description

Now used as offices by Forth Ports and its various subsidiaries, this was built in 1858-63 as a hydraulic pumping station for the Prince of Wales Dry (or Graving) Dock in the foreground.

RCAHMS have some fantastic <a href="http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/51922/details/edinburgh+leith+docks+albert+dock+prince+of+wales+dry+dock/" rel="noreferrer nofollow">photographs</a> taken by John Hume in the 1970s.

It's interesting to note the difference between this grand Italianate hydraulic station, and the <a href="http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=eh6++6pw&sll=55.950176,-3.187536&sspn=0.321792,0.612488&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Edinburgh+EH6+6PW,+United+Kingdom&ll=55.978961,-3.173461&spn=0.010049,0.027316&t=h&z=16&layer=c&cbll=55.978953,-3.169215&panoid=fsdlb-cFMv7POP1R1-hvrA&cbp=12,322.55,,0,6.68" rel="noreferrer nofollow">example</a> that was built in the 1890s to serve the adjacent Alexendra Dry Dock (and the Victoria Swing Bridge)...

As you can see I only had my 50mm prime on me at the time, hence the two stitched composites (which, as always, I can't decide my favourite between the two).
