En las narraciones clásicas, la muerte a Gerión, rey tiránico asentado en España, sería uno de los últimos trabajos de Hércules, realizado una vez que se habían asentado las célebres columnas de Calpe y Abyla. La fertilidad de las tierras españolas y la abundancia del ganado atrajeron a Hércules, que tuvo que acabar con la vida de Gerión para apoderarse de esas riquezas. Aunque sin obviar en su relato los intereses de Hércules, Baltasar de Vitoria justifica la muerte de Gerión por ser un usurpador. Poner fin a la vida de este rey respondería a una misión divina, una opinión de Santo Tomás que el mismo Vitoria recoge a propósito de la muerte de Busiris en Egipto, también a manos de Hércules: El que mata a un tirano, hace un gran servicio a Dios. Fiel a la concepción general de la serie del Salón de Reinos, Zurbarán ha ilustrado el momento en el que el héroe mata a Gerión y, por tanto, cumple la tarea encomendada. Sin embargo, el pintor ofrece interesantes variaciones al esquema general; por un lado muestra a Hércules de espaldas, siguiendo un modelo anatómico deudor de una estampa de Durero en la que también se representa al hijo de Júpiter, aunque adaptando esa imagen al personaje que había concebido para todo el conjunto, un hombre para nada idealizado, como demuestran los pliegues que dibuja en su cintura ya madura. Llamativa es también la posición de Gerión, caído en tierra tras recibir la embestida. Desconocemos de qué fuente se valió el artista para plasmar este osado escorzo que, tal y como se ha sugerido en alguna ocasión para los desnudos de esta serie, pudo también basarse en estudios del natural. También resulta interesante la representación del paisaje que envuelve la escena, en este caso y en contraste con el naturalismo de las figuras, de raigambre clasicista. En un claro de de este frondoso ambiente, se ha incluido lo que parece una arquitectura en ruinas. Para Serrera se trataría de una referencia al faro de Hércules del que habla Pérez de Moya: Edificó [Hércules] una soberbia torre que tenía ojos para ver los que a aquel puerto venían [...], con cuya claridad los navíos podían andar de noche (Texto extractado de Ruiz, L. en: El Palacio del Rey Planeta.
