Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A view inside the Whitney Point Rest Area along Interstate 81 in the town of Lisle, New York as seen on a November 2022 afternoon. Built in 2004 to a design by the Albany-based architectural firm of Dembling + Dembling, the aesthetics of this two-story, 11,000-square-foot facility - the only one that serves southbound traffic along Interstate 81 between Syracuse and the state line - could be described as a Postmodern take on the Tudor Revival, with the former's trademark streamlined Classical features (note the round-arched windows and timer trusses) juxtaposed alongside the rustic appearance and stark color contrasts of the latter. A modernized replacement for an antiquated and increasingly dilapidated 1970s-era facility, Whitney Point's slate of amenities includes handicapped-accessible public restrooms, vending machines, public telephones and WiFi access, racks of tourist brochures, an outdoor picnic area, and a NYSDOT substation and satellite office for the State Police's Interstate Highway Patrol.
