Summary
[edit]DescriptionIMGA0004 - G1 curtain antenna - Hoerby Shortwave Station, Sweden.jpg |
English: Antenna "G1" at Hoerby Shortwave Station in Sweden. This is a curtain antenna, consisting of 16 vertical wire half wave dipole antennas suspended in a 4x4 rectangular array, in front of a plane reflector consisting of a screen of many parallel vertical wires. These are suspended from support wires stretching between the two steel masts. This antenna is used to broadcast to large areas thousands of miles away, around the curve of the Earth, by skywave ("skip") propagation. It radiates a powerful beam of radio waves at a shallow angle into the sky, where it is reflected back to Earth by the ionosphere beyond the horizon.
Hoerby shortwave station, operated by the national broadcasting organization Sveriges Radio (Radio Sweden) was shut down 30 October 2010 due to a decision to concentrate on internet broadcasting. Svenska: Gardinantenn "G1" vid Hörby kortvågsstation |
